10 steps to ETL

May 14, 2008 · Filed Under BI, DW, ETL

Whether you buy or build your ETL tool, ETL development can be broken down into 10 steps:

  1. Create a high-level design for the target model.
  2. Choose, install, configure and learn the ETL tool of choice.
  3. Determine your default strategies.
  4. Drill down by target table.
  5. Develop the historical load for dimensions.
  6. Populate historical fact tables.
  7. Develop the dimension table incremental processing.
  8. Develop the fact table incremental processing
  9. Implement aggregate and OLAP loads.
  10. Create the plan for ETL operation (ie, production support), automation and future enhancements.
